STRATEGY Mid-tier firm opens Atlanta office

US firm RSM McGladrey has opened its first office in Atlanta, Georgia. The new office adds to the firm’s presence in the South East, which currently includes offices in Florida and the Carolinas. The firm works with more than 200 Georgia-based companies. “Atlanta is a major financial and business centre and we are pleased to be part of this dynamic marketplace,” managing director of the Atlanta office Mike Stokke said. The office will initially focus on tax, including income tax accounting for progressive companies, but anticipates that the initial tax service offerings will lead to additional tax, accounting and consulting opportunities.

LEGAL PwC pays £750 to former employee

PricewaterhouseCoopers UK (PwC) has been ordered to pay just £750 ($1,200) to former employee Mihaela Popa after she tried to claim a record amount in damages from the firm. Popa had demanded £40 million in compensation for loss of earnings and hurt feelings after she resigned from her job as a forensic accountant with the firm in 2006. She claimed that PwC tried to sabotage her career after she was made redundant from the two jobs she took after leaving the Big Four firm. Popa previously lost tribunal claims of race discrimination, constructive unfair dismissal and wrongful dismissal against PwC in 2007. “In the circumstances, we take the view that we are looking at an isolated incident of victimisation or retaliation,” the court ruled. PwC will seek to recover costs in court later this year.
