Adriano Correa, partner at BDO Brazil, was nominated for TA & IAB Young accountant of the year award 2017

Adriano Correa is a partner at BDO, the global network of independent accounting firms, in Brazil. BDO is one of the largest assurance and advisory firms in world. Adriano is a qualified Brazilian chartered accountant with over 10 years’ experience in audit, assurance, corporate finance and strategy services in Brazil and Canada. Adriano has led engagements and advised clients within the technology, manufacturing telecommunication, oil and gas and mining industries. During this time, Adriano became one of the first advanced IFRS reviewers recognized by notorious specialization in his firm in the early stages of the framework adoption in the countries he worked in.

When Brazil started to struggle with its financial and political crisis, it was critical for BDO Brazil to have effective accounting records and just-in-time financial controls and indicators in place to enable appropriate and timely decisions. At that time, the firm’s ERP was presenting incongruent and unreconciled information, situation that had not being solved in the last 5 years, despite the firm’s efforts.

Adriano volunteered to fix the problem, spearheading a new ERP implementation, which was finished in record time (within a couple months) and considerably below the original budget, which was only possible due to his deep knowledge of accounting and business management, but also by his understanding on how these areas should be supported and integrated to information systems and technology. The information from the previous ERP system was reconciled shortly after, enabling adequate billing, collection, and negotiations. As a result, the firm’s decision-making process improved substantially, allowing also for substantial cost reductions, and preparing the firm to tacitly deflect the negative effects of the economic crisis. Beyond the original scope, live dashboards were provided to partners with information they need to conduct their business daily.

Adriano and his team performed a significant turnaround in the BDO Brazil’s corporate finance department, increasing revenues by over 100% in the first year and by 2 digits in the second. As part of the initiative, he introduced in the firm’s advisory department 36 new products, restructured the area’s recruiting and training processes, improved methodology considerably, and increased profit margins substantially. As a result, the firm became a qualified service provider to major financial institutions and S&P-500 clients in different areas in the country. Some of the products developed included the use of business analytics, which was required to handle databases with hundreds of millions of records (i.e. Big Data) and assist clients in calculations and decision-making. Over the last 2 years, Adriano started to leverage on the power of the analytics tools developed to improve computer-assisted audit tests (“CAATs”) and data visualization, which improved the efficiency and quality of audit engagements.

As an innovation enthusiastic, Adriano is currently assisting BDO Brazil in the creation of its cybersecurity department, which assist clients with understanding how information systems impact their financial reporting, and how to improve their security, mitigate risks, and prevent cyber-attacks.
