Global searches for Google’s Gemini soared to 327,058 on June 4th, as users sought an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT during its outage.

This is according to an analysis from QR Code Generator. Their experts also observed that the surge in searches for “Gemini” correlates to how much people searched for “ChatGPT down” over the same period. The search volume axes for these two keywords trended in parallel on the morning of June 4th.

The first reports of ChatGPT’s outage occurred in the early hours of June 4th, just before 8 AM London time, according to DownDetector. This prompted people to turn to Google to address their conversational AI needs. Gemini, Google’s alternative chatbot, witnessed a remarkable surge in searches during this period.

Usually, people around the world search for “Gemini” 204,991 times per day. This is based on the average daily search volumes between May 4th and June 3rd, 2024. As soon as ChatGPT went down, searches for “Gemini” increased by almost 60%.

As users worldwide navigated the ChatGPT downtime, Gemini emerged as a trending topic and a compelling alternative for conversational AI. Only four hours after ChatGPT’s outage, Gemini’s global popularity soared to 327,058 searches.

Searches for “Microsoft Copilot” and “ChatGPT alternative” also increased in OpenAI’s absence. There are usually 11,090 searches for “Microsoft Copilot” every day, based on Google Trends data for the past month. This increased by 50% to 16,677 on June 4th. Meanwhile, 11,000 people searched for “ChatGPT alternative” within the first few hours of June 4th, whereas before, there were about 898 daily searches, on average. However, search volumes for both of these keywords are significantly lower compared to those for “Gemini”.

Commenting on this, QR Code Generator CEO, Marc Porcar, said: “Google has been making incredible efforts to position itself as OpenAI’s main competitor for conversational AI and we are witnessing clear signals of that happening today. The fact that there is a clear parallel trend between ChatGPT’s outage and Gemini’s search surge suggests that people perceive Gemini as an obvious alternative to ChatGPT. In ChatGPT’s absence, it seems clear that people turn to Gemini.”

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has become increasingly popular as a leading AI-powered conversational agent. Google released the Gemini chatbot at the end of 2023 chatbot as a successor to LaMDA and PaLM 2. At the time, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, claimed that Gemini Ultra performed better than GPT-V4 on a series of text and multimodal capabilities.
