KPMG UK has added a total of 52 new partners over the course of the financial year ending September 2014, but remains short of its target for women partners.

Among the new partners, 29 were promoted internally, effective 1 October, while 23 were recruited from outside KPMG UK over the past 12 months.

Despite the number of successful female candidates doubling since 2013, only 15% of KPMG UK’s partners are female, according to KPMG UK chairman Simon Collins.

"This is not where we want to be," he said. "A third of our newly promoted partners are women, which is a testament to a significant effort to remove any barriers to the best talent coming through the firm," he explained, but the improvement has not been echoedamong the firm’s latest round of external recruits.

"While we have seen results internally, there is more work to be done on our external hires, hence our introduction of assertive diversity benchmarking on all external agencies we use, to compare the level of diversity in the candidates they supply," added Collins.

He said: "We take seriously our role as a responsible employer and we are determined to ensure open access to our profession. We are working hard on our approach to both internal and external appointments of partners but this ethos also permeates our entire recruitment process."

The appointments bring the firm’s overall number of partners to 613 out of approximately 11,500 staff members.

Collins said of the appointments in general: "We continue to see high demand for our services from the wide range of businesses in the financial services industry and, accordingly, a third of our newly promoted partners are specialists in this sector."
