The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) has introduced a dedicated online resource page, titled “Information for Smaller Firms,” aimed at providing tailored content for smaller audit firms.

This initiative is part of PCAOB’s increased focus on firms that issue audit reports or play a substantial role in the audits of 100 or fewer public companies.

In a concerted effort to support smaller firms, PCAOB has been actively engaging with this segment of the industry through various initiatives.

These include hosting nationwide forums for auditors of smaller businesses and broker-dealers and emphasising the adaptability of its standards and rules.

The board has also been proactive in disseminating insights from its inspections and has initiated a new publication series, “Audit Focus,” focused on smaller firms.

The newly launched resource page is a repository of materials for smaller audit firms.

It features links to “Audit Focus” publications and videos, recordings of recent PCAOB forum presentations, and a registration form for a new mailing list designed for small audit firm practitioners.

This page is a complement to the broader PCAOB resources available to auditors from firms of all sizes, such as the “Information for Auditors” and “Staff Publications” pages.

PCAOB chair Erica Williams said: “Smaller audit firms are an important part of the auditing landscape, and they play a critical role in investor protection.

“The PCAOB is keenly interested in further engaging with auditors at smaller firms on their unique needs and challenges and finding new ways – such as the resource page we are launching today – to help them succeed.”

In November 2024, PCAOB introduced new requirements for the public reporting of standardised company and engagement metrics.

It also revised the framework for gathering information from audit firms, aiming to improve transparency and oversight in the accountancy sector to safeguard investors.
