The independent Brexit advisory commission for public services, launched by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) in March, has released its first five key recommendations for the UK future government.
The five recommendation range from the obvious – understand and quantify the impacts of Brexit as well as the impact of the uncertainty in the negotiation period on public services and the citizens that rely on them recommendation through the establishment of a sub-committee for public services and Brexit – to more forward looking ones: seizing the opportunity for further public service reform and devolution.
Indeed the committee recommended that going beyond the immediate challenge of Brexit delivery, the government should “commit to scrutinising EU public service regulations and policies that are known to be inefficient and readapt them to be more effective. By doing this Brexit will be a catalyst for reform rather than an obstacle.”
The commission also recommended that the powers and resources repatriated from the EU to the UK should not be relocated in the central government but rather should be shifted to devolved nations and regions of the UK to boost the local economies and promote inclusive growth.
