Canopy, a practice management platform for accounting companies, has added AI-powered tax preparation to its software via a new integration with Filed.
The new feature, Smart Prep, powered by Filed, is claimed to expedite the path from completed client intake to review-ready tax returns.

By bringing tax preparation directly into Canopy workflow, accounting practices can reduce hand-offs, reduce manual data entry and keep visibility across the whole tax process without leaving the platform.
The launch builds on Canopy’s existing Smart Intake tool, which companies use to gather documents, automate client reminders, and ensure they have complete and accurate information before starting tax work.
With the Filed integration, companies can move this structured intake data directly into tax preparation without disrupting their workflow or changing the tax software they already use.

The integration is currently in the pilot phase and is expected to be rolled out more widely after the 2026 tax season.
During the pilot, participating companies can start AI-powered tax preparation once Smart Intake is finished, review output for accuracy and track progress without leaving Canopy.
The initial release will support basic and advanced 1040 returns, with additional return types set to be released later in the year.
