A study by UHY Hacker Young has found that 18 out of bottom 20 areas for new business births in the UK are in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, a statistic the firm attributed to a lack of support from the government.
UHY Hacker Young partner in the London office Colin Jones talking to the BBC Today program said that it was down to a lack of support and opportunity in those regions and government should do more to facilitate and encourage new businesses. Jones argued that the government’s efforts in supporting areas such as the so-called ‘Silicon Roundabout’ cluster of technology businesses around London’s Old Street, and the Northern Powerhouse project should be expended to other parts of the country.

“There are things that government can do to provide facilities to make sure that the infrastructure is in place for companies to do the best that they can do and at the moment I don’t think that the coverage across the UK is there hence why we see the Celtic fringe is falling behind,” he said
