Before accepting the BDO role, he served as CIO at a major insurance brokerage and risk management business, where he oversaw an IT organisation of around 250 staff.
His appointment follows current CIO Russ Ahlers’ decision to step down from the CIO position on 1 September 2026.
Ahlers has led BDO USA’s technology function for more than a decade, expanding the company’s core infrastructure to support its growth.
He took on the CIO post in 2015 and since then has been involved in bringing in new technology tools and systems to bolster the company’s operations and market position.
BDO chief operating officer Mark Ellenbogen said: “For more than a decade as CIO, Russ has provided steady leadership in helping BDO navigate tremendous growth and rapid technological change.
“He has played a pivotal role in strengthening our technology capabilities and building a strong foundation for the future.
“As we look to the future, our focus on technology and innovation could not be more important. We look forward to benefitting from Jim’s significant experience leading complex technology organisations and transformative initiatives.”
Ahlers and Maza are expected to work side by side during the transition period to keep key technology projects on track and align the IT function with the company’s changing requirements.
Maza said: “Russ has built a strong technology foundation for BDO, and I am grateful for his leadership and the impact he has had across the firm.
“I am looking forward to working with him during this transition and building on the foundation to advance secure innovation and support BDO’s continued growth.”
