In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, Sports Direct has confimed that, subsequent to the publication of the company’s annual report and accounts on 13 August 2019, that it had received notice from Grant Thornton (GT).

The statement dryly says that GT informed Sports Direct that, ‘following a review of its client portfolio, GT intends not to seek reappointment as the company's auditors and will cease to hold office as auditors of the company with effect from 11 September 2019, being the date of the company's annual general meeting’.

GT’s resignation had been widely reported as fact already and follows the chaotic debacle over the announcement of the company’s results which ensued following Sports Direct being presented with a ‘surprise’ tax bill from the Belgian authorities just 24 hours beforehand.
