US internal audit ‘guru’ Larry Harrington, a pioneer of the application of artificial intelligence in auditing, will deliver the keynote address at the Brazilian Congress of Internal Audit (CONBRAI 2019), set to take place in Florianópolis in September.

In his presentation at CONBRAI 2019 Harrington will cover the technological challenges that will increasingly impact the auditor's routine, such as artificial intelligence and so-called ‘auditing 4.0’.

Harrington was, for many years, chief audit officer of Raytheon. Paulo Gomes, director general of the Institute of Internal Auditors of Brazil, said: “In addition to being a specific niche, the guided missile industry is one that most needs high levels of compliance and governance. Having him with us will be a privilege and [an opportunity for] immense learning."

More than 800 participants are expected to attend CONBRAI 2019.  The central theme will be 'Technology and Innovation for Internal Audit'. Among the topics being coveredby more than 30 presentations will be compliance, government audit, fraud prevention, big data, analytics and IT audit.

In 2018 Harrington was inducted into the American Hall of Distinguished Audit Practitioners. Among the achievements Harrington was recognized for include:

  • Being the first IIA Board Chair to establish diversity and inclusion goals
  • Developing programmes to identify and coach future leaders within the profession
  • Personally funding an in-depth study on women in internal auditing
  • Focusing on increasing the number of women, people of colour and millennials leading the profession
  • Leading an initiative on the impact of artificial intelligence and robotics on business and the profession.
