Corporate leaders are focusing on long-term
sustainable opportunities to gain a competitive edge, KPMG US chief
executive John Veihmeyer said on the opening day of KPMG’s business
perspective on sustainable growth summit.

“The topic of sustainable growth has moved
from the peripheral to a core business strategy issue,” Veihmeyer
said.

“The time has now come to enhance corporate
responsibility reporting information systems to bring them up to
the level that is equal to financial reporting, including a
comparable quality of governance controls and management to
maintain standards and stakeholder confidence.”

Veihmeyer said chief executives are
increasingly implementing sustainability programmes to contribute
to the bottom line by cost reduction or increased profitability,
and that reporting to stakeholders on an organisation’s
sustainability efforts has come under increased focus.
