UK accountancy firm BDO is reported to be trialling an Alice in Wonderland-themed virtual reality game as a new ingredient in the hiring process. According to The Daily Telegraph, applicants will take part in virtual reality challenges that could include scenarios such as crossing a chasm on a wooden beam or searching for a key to leave a room where objects shrink or get larger depending on the participant’s actions.
The VR games are expected to show how people adapt their actions to circumstances as well as ‘highlighting resilience and independent thinking’. Alternatively, as Jefferson Airplane pointed out several decades ago, you could: “Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall…”
There is, however, a real point to the fun and games. BDO is conscious it is in a free-for-all for talent, competing with the Big4, start-ups and tech disruptors and it has to stand out from the crowd. And… if you go chasing rabbits, and you know you're going to fall; Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar has given you the call!
