Soe Win, managing partner at Deloitte Touch Myanmar Vigour Advisory, has been nominated to be the country’s finance minister following the resignation of Kyaw Win from the position last week.

The nomination was made by Myanmar’s president Win Myint, and was announced on the official Facebook page of the parliament of Myanmar. No other official statement has been made by the government.

Soe Win has had a range of financial experience having previously served as the general manager at Myanmar Foreign trade bank from which he retired in 2000. In 2003 he founded of Myanmar Vigour which became a member firm of Deloitte in 2015.

Kyaw Win resigned from the position, which he had held since March 2016, last Friday. This was reportedly due to allegations of corruption and an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission of Myanmar, however the government has yet to comment on this.

According to Transparency International, Myanmar has had problems with corruption due to the military exercising its influence in politics despite the country’s first general election which took place in 2010.
